Dun Laoghaire, 14:00 Saturday 23 November
The rediscovery of Endurance. Shackleton’s ship, is more than just a historical curiosity; it’s a testament to human ingenuity and the drive to explore the unknown. The documentary Endurance explores this spirit of discovery, not just by chronicling Shackleton’s legendary leadership in the face of near-impossible odds, but by celebrating the cutting-edge technology that made its rediscovery possible. Using footage from the expedition itself, as well as restored archival material from Shackleton’s original voyage, the film shifts between past and present, creating a gripping narrative of endurance — both human and technological.
Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, renowned for their Academy Award-winning documentary Free Solo (2018), and co-directed by Natalie Hewit, the documentary provides an intimate portrayal of modern-day explorers who, much like Shackleton’s crew, venture into the most desolate corners of the planet. The film not only covers the technological triumphs of the 2022 expedition but also dives deep into the challenges faced by contemporary polar explorers, showcasing their resilience, determination, and commitment to scientific inquiry.
As sailors, we are well aware of Shackleton’s reputation and that of Tom Creane and I believe this movie will be of interest to all members.
National Geographic has kindly allowed the Atlantic Youth Trust to show it to members and supporters. The Trust has offered us 20 free tickets to attend the first showing of this movie in Ireland.
