2026 marks the 40th anniversary of an extraordinary flight around Ireland.
100 members of the National and Royal Irish Yacht Clubs flew on a commercial British Airways Boeing 737, not to London, but around Ireland at low level.
The flight followed the route of the Round Ireland Race that morning, and as the fleet rounded the Fastnet Rock the 737 then flew on around the Skelligs, over Mt Brandon, and up to Sligo before returning to Dublin Airport bang on time for the regular scheduled 11:00 Heathrow flight.
This extraordinary flight was never repeated and became known as the Flight of Fantasy, since even those aboard were not sure if it were really true. We captured several minutes of Super-8 video during the flight – so we know it really did happen!
Join us to hear the story, told by the captain of the flight, John Leahy.
