John Leahy

From the Commodore

At the Cruising Association of Ireland AGM 2021, Commodore Vincent Lundy presented John Leahy the Crystal Lantern in recognition of his years of work within the Association and as an acknowledgement of Irish Sailing awarding John the Volunteer of the Year 2020

John Leahy

John is a long standing member of the CAI, A member who has been supportive in so many ways to the Association with knowledge, experience and hours of preparation and work specifically for the CAI and has been many years on the CAI committee having been acting Commodore in the years 2012, 13 and 14 and is of course our currently acting Hon. Secretary.

John won The Irish Sailing Volunteer of the Year Award 2020 against dozens of nominations entered by the sailing community country wide. While 2020 was looking like being a miserable year for our members, John initiated a constant stream of communication for the CAI members which strengthened the bonds of the members and helped support people in a time of crisis, loneliness and fear. This was recognised across the country by Irish Sailing awarding John – The Irish Sailing Volunteer of the Year 2020.

In presenting John the Crystal Lantern, the CAI Committee and members are recognising this great achievement of John being awarded Volunteer of the Year 200, but much more than that:- We also recognise the years of dedication John has given to the CAI, his ability to maintain contact with the members, his organisational skills, his sharing of his extensive knowledge of sailing and not least weather. John has continually kept a concerning eye on our members as they complete their seaward journeys with advice, weather and sea forecasts and options if conditions were to deteriorate.

To recognise John’s so many facets and support given to the CAI, thecommittee commissioned a piece of Galway Crystal in the fashion of a Lantern to reflect the light that John shines on the CAI and guides our sailors home to safety.

The committee and members of the Cruising Association of Ireland join together in congratulating John on winning The Irish Sailing Volunteer of the Year 2020 and being such a great asset to the Association.
