Malahide Muster 2025 – Report

Saturday 3 May

Bank Holiday – DART Not Running – Small Craft Warning

The outlook could have been better as Timballoo along with Phixius left Howth for Lambay, beating our way in a sea that was a little bit lumpy. We dropped anchor to the south of Lambay where it was well sheltered from the wind, in a very protected flat sea and the promise of sun tans in the making. Phixius rafted up against us to have their picnic while we heated a few quiches in the oven and enjoyed them with a selection of fresh salads.

Five boats made it to Lambay for mid afternoon and enjoyed a smooth return sail as the sea had flattened considerably and the wind had dropped to a steady 10kts or so.

We were back at Malahide Yacht Club (MYC) for 6.00pm where our “resident chef” Noel served up a very respectable and enjoyable barbecue to forty one sailors who had only compliments for the food, the service and the presentation.

The evening continued with members and friends enjoying “talking the talk”, the craic and a bit of music. Malahide Yacht Club is well recognised for their display of friendship and hospitality which did not go unnoticed.

Our thanks go to MYC, to our caterer Noel Clarke, and to  Malahide Marina. Most of all we thank all the sailors from Malahide, Howth and CAI who supported the event this year.

The Malahide Muster is an annual CAI event, and we hope it will continue for many years. Our records show that in 2021 the Malahide Muster attracted almost thirty boats with a hundred hungry sailors to feed while under the shadow of covid. We were blessed with some decent weather and a 50% discount in the marina, and our resident chef Noel did a great job that day serving the food to the boats on the pontoons.

This year very few CAI members participated, and our fleet was too small to qualify for the 25% discount the marina kindly offered. In our review we need to understand the reasons for the low turnout, so that in future the event gets the support it needs to justify the effort put in by the organisers and hosts. Comments and suggestions are always welcome: events@cruising.ie.
