On Saturday 18 November more than fifty smartly-dressed cruising sailors gathered in the elegant dining room of the Royal Irish Yacht Club (RIYC) to review the year’s sailing, renew friendships and make plans for next year. After a welcome from our guest Gerry Dowling (RIYC commodore) we tucked in to a splendid three-course dinner.
As dessert and coffee were served CAI commodore Simon Parker spoke about the year’s events, thanked the committee for their work and summarised our plans for 2024. He introduced our guest speaker, Fiacc O’Brolchain of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG).
Fiacc gave us a brief account of his interesting sailing career before describing the background, objectives and operations of the IWDG. The group owns the sailing yacht Celtic Mist, sailed with the help of volunteers and available to all IWDG members. He urged us all to install the group’s smartphone app and to report every cetacean sighting. His comments on the recent behaviour of Orcas near Spain and Portugal sparked lively discussion and many questions.
We thank the commodore and the catering staff of RIYC for their hospitality, and our speaker for his illuminating and entertaining talk. Thanks also to our treasurer Mike Kelly who organised the event for us, and to Kevin for the photographic record.
