The CAI Photography competition 2024 results were announced at the AGM during March. . Congratulations to the winners listed below. There were some great entries, and very deserving winners in both the Photo and Video categories.

Our thanks once again go to Nicholas Bendon, MD of CHMarine.com who joined forces with the CAI again this year to co-sponsor the prizes with CH Marine vouchers for the winners.

The competition was organised by a small sub-committee. The judging committee this year was comprised of Professional Photographer Eugene Langan, and Margaret & Paul Fay on Photography. Kevin Cardiff judged the Videos, and comprised a youtube video to showcase the variety of images and video received. Entries were received and administered by Aidan Coughlan.

We hope to have the CH Marine vouchers sent out to the winners shortly – just in time for the sailing season !.

A selection of the entries are listed in the FLICKR album – a wide range of marine-related subjects were received.

#1 OPEN CATEGORY (Photography ) - Kieran Murphy – “Sovereign of the Sea” - €100 CH MARINE Voucher

“Sovereign of the Sea”  taken by Kieran Murphy. This was taken while day Cruising on ‘Somoya’, on the way back to Kinsale after a swim off the boat in Oysterhaven, with Sovereign Island in the background.

Kieran crews on racing, cruises and delivery trips. He takes photos with his phone when he gets the chance in between tasks and tacks. Kieran certainly has an eye for a Photograph, and it paid off here – this photo wins first prize in this year’s competition and is a dynamic shot with lots of colour and action.

#1 MEMBERS ONLY CATEGORY (Photography ) – Clifford Brown – “Full Spinnaker” - €100 CH MARINE Voucher

img-9

This photograph titled “Full Spinnaker” was taken on the CAI cruise to the Menai Strait in 2016 by Clifford Brown (who happens to be an ex commodore of the CAI). Clifford always brings his camera when cruising, and has produced a few great shots over the years. We suspect the yacht is “Haika” – a Vancouver 38 Pilot sailed by Maurice Baskeyfield from a mooring around the Menai Straits.

#1 OPEN CATEGORY (Video) – Danielle Hayes – “Morning Traffic” - €100 CH MARINE Voucher

img-11

Morning Traffic is a delightful video taken in the early morning by Danielle Hayes, VTS Operator in Dublin Port Company. This video is a timelapse of “Pavo J” departing Dublin Port at sunrise, and shows some lovely early morning colour.

#1 MEMBERS ONLY CATEGORY (Video) – Michael Kelly– “Sunrise off Carnsore” - €75 CH MARINE Voucher

img-13

The #1 winner in the members-only Video category was another early morning video with great colour. Michael Kelly submits this Video taken during an early departure from Kilmore Quay to catch tide. Michael recalls that he was single-handed, feeling close to nature watching the sun rising in the East at the tip of carnsore point.

#2 MEMBERS ONLY CATEGORY (Photography ) –Derek Duff – “Malahide Sunset” - €75 CH MARINE Voucher

img-15

This time we get to see a wonderful Malahide Sunset – submitted by Derek Duff, who sails out of the estuary and was rewarded with this fabulous sunset in the approach to Malahide marina.

#3 MEMBERS ONLY CATEGORY (Photography ) – Jane Matthews – “I put the body where you told me’” - €50 CH MARINE Voucher

img-17

This humorous image comes from Jane Matthews who sails “Scarba” a lovely little Westerley Centaur with her husband Peter Mulholland out of Carlingford. In case anyone suspects foul play, there is an explanation ! Jane says that their steering failed and she lowered her husband Pete into the bowels of the boat to investigate, harnessed to the main boom.

#4 MEMBERS ONLY CATEGORY (Photography ) – Cian Gallagher– “Race Morning” - €25 CH MARINE Voucher

Cian Gallagher has been a CAI member for nearly two decades since the noughties. Never far from a boat for too long Cian has cruised for leisure and deliveries around Ireland, Scotland, Irish Sea, Biscay, Med. He’s also a keen photographer who is handy with a camera and his photos have also cropped up in previous CAI Photo competitions on the winning list.

#5 MEMBERS ONLY CATEGORY (Photography ) – Leszek Wolnik– “Arctic Trawler - Northern Lights” - €25 CH MARINE Voucher

img-21

Leszek Wolnik is an active CAI member and took this image in Dalvik, Iceland. These are a different type of “Northern lights!”. He says that the photo was taken on an iPhone despite having a full-frame Canon R5 to hand! It has still done the photo justice – what beautiful deep colours, and a great composition
